It’s become tricky to fly with your vaping device. You want to follow the rules, but that can be a bit hard when they change depending on where you are. To help you navigate through the current vaping flight policies landscape, here are some helpful pointers:

Am I Allowed to Use My Electronic Cigarette on an Airplane?

While a federal guideline has been proposed, that piece of legislation has yet to be passed. Regardless, most major airlines in the U.S. have each enacted policies banning the use of them when in their airplanes. There are steep penalties if caught using a vaping device. These restrictions hold true for domestic flights, but international carriers may have different policies. If you’re planning a trip abroad, it’s a good idea to check with the airline first.

Am I Allowed to Use My Electronic Cigarette Inside the Airport?

It all depends on the airport. You see, while many airports have banned the use of e-cigs in terminals, others haven’t. If you’re unsure, it doesn’t hurt to ask. Some airports, like Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, do allow vaping inside their building. Unfortunately, if you happen to be in an airport that restricts the use of electronic cigarettes, such as Philadelphia International Airport, then you’ll have to vape either in a designated smoking lounge or outside before you check through.

Can I Fly With My Electronic Cigarette?

You can, yes. On the TSA website, it states that vaping devices may be brought onto an aircraft, but in past years, directed you to keep it in your carry-on. In a statement released last July, TSA gave the go-ahead for electronic cigarettes to be packed in either carry-on or checked luggage.

Which Cities Allow Vaping Indoors?

Because these laws change so quickly, there’s no list of cities that allow or restrict vaping. Many places have included electronic cigarettes in public smoking bans, so it’s best to check the current laws of your destination before pulling out your prized vaporizer.

Can I Vape in My Own Vehicle or Someone Else’s Vehicle?

In your own vehicle, yes. In someone else’s car, there’s no law against it, but you might want to check with the driver first. Now, if your renting a vehicle, you’ll need to check with the rent-a-car company first before you decide to puff on your e-cig, as there are some rent-a-car companies that classify vaping as smoking, hence they prohibit it.
