The Workplace and The Vaping Users

The Workplace and The Vaping Users

Vaping at Work

The vaping industry in a whole, as we focus mainly in the US, is soon to become a $2 billion industry. With such a growing market, where and when people can vape has taken center stage.

Though vaping is still fresh in today’s society, there are those who bring up the health risks or benefits of it. And this is how we tie in what’s going on in the vaping world to employers. You see, they’re attempting to come up with company policies concerning the use of vaping. So far, these devices have been banned in three states: ND, NJ and UT, and 172 cities. These bans are in workplaces, bars and restaurants. In other states, many employers continue to debate internally with whether to ban their use as they ban traditional cigarettes.

These 4 large employers for example have stepped forward and issued their (to us vaping users unpopular) policies.

  • Walmart limits usage to designated smoking areas.

  • Starbucks doesn’t allow smoking within 25 ft. of its stores.

  • CVS, which doesn’t allow smoking anywhere on its corporate campuses, has a no-tolerance policy with these devices.

  • McDonald’s has banned electronic cigarettes in its company-owned restaurants, but leaves the decision up to owners at its franchises

Now, some employers do see the advantages that electronic cigarettes can bring to their company, mainlyincreased productivity and better employee health benefits. Cheryl Dooley, the president of a spring manufacturing company in Tulsa, OK, was a long-time two pack-a-day smoker who tried, and failed, to quit 15 times. But after doctors found a blood clot in her lungs, she tried vaping, which finally stopped her cravings for tradtional cigarettes. “I realized that even bad addicts can quit with e-cigarettes,” she says. Now this story gets better. A third of her 75 employees smoked, so she went and bought 28 vaping kits for around $100 each and gave them to her workers. What a boss. So far, Dooley says that half of the smokers at her company have used the kits to quit smoking.

Most employers, especially the larger ones, will likely follow their board of directors or stock holders in issuing their policies or restirctions of vaping at work. At the end of the day, in today’s workplace, most employers simply want to keep their employees happy. So, those who vape can expect workplace restrictions on vaping to become the rule and not the exception.
